Asian Inspiration: Thailand’s Lantern Festival

Written on Friday, July 13, 2018 by Thailand Lantern Festival
South-East Asia has to top the list of Australia’s most fascinating neighbours. Vastly different landscapes, cultures and traditions can all be found within a hop-skip-and-jump of each other; providing travellers with a rich array of things to see and do.
Enchantment can come in the form of Thailand’s Lantern Festival, relaxation through a massage on the shores of a sandy beach; enlightenment from a day spent following in the footsteps of Buddha. Perhaps golf on a championship course overlooking the sea or a wander through bustling night markets is more your idea of a good time? You’re in luck, South East Asia has something for everyone.

In the meantime, let us introduce you to one of our favourite festivals…

Thai Festival of Lights – Yi Peng Lantern Release
The Festival of Lights is celebrated all around Thailand with the release of thousands of candle lit floats (Loi Krathongs) onto rivers and waterways as offerings to the river spirits. Northern Thailand however, performs a different ceremony, ‘Yi Peng’, which pays homage to Buddha through the release of thousands of lanterns into the night sky. The spectacle is simply mesmerising. Chiang Mai hosts a week of celebration including traditional Thai dance, a grand parade, beauty pageants, fireworks, and decorations in the old city, with the lantern event on the full moon night.
