What You Won’t Find in the Brochures: Travel Designer Insights from Turkey & Egypt

Written on Friday, June 6, 2025 by

Spanning nearly three weeks, my itinerary wove through the bustling streets of Istanbul, the ancient ruins of Ephesus, the surreal landscapes of Cappadocia, and the timeless wonders along the Nile. I explored cities where history lives and breathes cultures as layered as the ruins themselves. This was not just a sightseeing tour, it was a full-sensory immersion into two civilisations that have shaped the world.

What We Discovered

Stays That Elevate the Experience

  • Sofitel Dubai The Obelisk
Ideal for stopovers: close to Dubai Mall and the Burj Khalifa, with underground access to WAFI Mall. The club access makes it perfect for clients wanting comfort and convenience during transit.

  • Marriott Mena House, Cairo
The location is unmatched — you can literally see the pyramids from the breakfast terrace. A must for clients seeking a truly iconic Egyptian experience with excellent service.

  • MS Miriam Nile Cruise
A standout for clients interested in sailing the Nile. Comfortable, boutique-style, and also used by trusted brands like Trafalgar and Insight, making it a reliable recommendation.

Travel Segments & Hidden Highlights

  • In Istanbul, a few days isn’t enough — but if that’s all you have, don’t miss the Blue Mosque lit at night, or the 20-minute ferry ride to the Asian side. The food scene there is exceptional and far less touristy.

  • Ephesus genuinely deserves its UNESCO status. Unlike many ruins, it feels alive — the Library of Celsus and amphitheatre are especially well-preserved and give real context to ancient Roman life.

  • Pamukkale’s limestone terraces are beautiful, but they do get crowded. My advice? Stay the night nearby so you can visit early in the morning before day-trippers arrive.

  • Cappadocia’s hot air balloons are absolutely worth the early wake-up. For those nervous about safety — it’s regulated, and many operators have years of experience. The Göreme Open Air Museum is also a must; it gives deep insight into monastic cave life and is rich in historical detail.

Our Trusted Partners

Travelling with Contiki gave me great insight into how well their itineraries are curated — culturally rich, well-paced, and ideal for clients wanting a seamless group experience. We also had the chance to experience elements from Insight Vacations and Trafalgar, including the MS Miriam Nile cruise, which delivered excellent service and comfort throughout.

Seeing these trusted brands in action reaffirmed why we recommend them — they handle the details so you can focus on the experience.

Local Insights

  • In Konya, I gained a new appreciation for Sufism and the legacy of Rumi. Even clients unfamiliar with spiritual travel would find the dervish history here fascinating.

  • On the Asian side of Istanbul, small cafes served the most authentic Turkish meals I had all trip. I’d point any food-loving traveller here for a deeper dive into the cuisine.

  • In Cairo, visiting the Hanging Church in Old Coptic Cairo offered a peaceful contrast to the buzz of Khan el-Khalili. It’s a reminder of Egypt’s religious diversity and depth.

  • Along the Nile, seeing children wave from village banks as we sailed past reminded me that Egypt isn’t just a destination of relics — it’s living, breathing, and deeply personal.

Reflective Thoughts

What I took from this journey — beyond the beauty — was knowledge. The kind that changes how you plan, what you recommend, and what matters to different travellers. Having seen it myself, I can guide our clients with confidence: not just on where to go, but when, how, and why. That’s the value of first-hand insight — and it’s what sets us apart.
